An excavation is any man-made cavity or depression in the earth’s surface, including its sides, walls, or faces, formed by earth removal. A trench is a narrow excavation where the depth is greater than its width. Trenching and excavation hazards include utility strikes, cave-ins, engulfment, and atmospheric hazards.
