Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) manages the medical surveillance program for University of Michigan (U-M) personnel who have the potential for occupationally related stressors or illness. The Medical Surveillance Program provides physical examinations and other relevant testing for staff with potential for occupational-related exposures. Personnel determined to be covered under regulatory requirements for medical surveillance will be notified through EHS and entered into the program.
Medical records and test results are confidential per federal law. U-M EHS only receives a physician’s determination as to whether an employee is physically fit to work under the stressors presented by their work environment and personal protective equipment. U-M EHS does not receive test results or diagnoses concerning the employee’s general health or particular conditions. If it is determined that the employee is not able to perform a particular type of work or task, this will be discussed in detail with the employee and noted as a restriction by the Occupational Physician.

DOT (CDL) Drug/Alcohol Testing Program
U-M employees with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) must comply with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements for drug and alcohol testing. The DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program:
- Maintains and distributes the U-M Drug and Alcohol Substance Abuse Policy to regulated drivers
- Conducts random testing to assure compliance with federal rules
- DOT (CDL) Drug/Alcohol Testing Program
