Per federal and state regulations, the University of Michigan (U-M) is required to implement and maintain a Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan and a Pollution Incident Prevention Plan (PIPP) to prevent the release of petroleum substances, salt, and Michigan Part 5 Rules listed polluting materials into the environment, especially to surface waters. The plans include inspections, inspection schedules, and secondary containment designs for containers storing these materials. The plans also include information about U-M preventative maintenance and spill response plans in the event of a spill.
