Emergency situations can arise from the use, storage, or transfer of radioactive material or the misuse of radiation-producing devices such as x-ray units. Incidents may involve the loss of radioactive material, the spread of radioactive contamination, or the accidental exposure of individuals.
In the event of a spill or emergency involving radioactive material, the immediate objectives are to prevent or reduce the chance of personnel contamination, prevent dispersal of the contaminant, and decontaminate the area.
The Preventing or Reducing the Dispersal of Radioactive Contamination Following a Spill procedure explains how to minimize radioactive contamination after a spill.
