Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring group of fibrous minerals that was historically added to many building materials because it was fireproof and wear resistant.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that building owners develop a proactive in-place management program rather than requiring removal of all asbestos materials.  This strategy involves identifying asbestos containing materials (ACM), maintaining those materials in good condition and removing ACM as needed during maintenance or renovation activities.

Per the Environmental Protection Agency’s recommendations, the U-M proactively manages ACM in place through a program that:

  • Identifies the ACM
  • Maintains the materials in good condition
  • Removes the ACM as needed during maintenance or renovation activities

The purpose of the program is to reduce or eliminate the risk of exposure to asbestos containing materials.
