Grant Applications

As part of the grant application process— and, sometimes, during the grant cycle—granting agencies require proposers (lab directors) to provide verification that their research (our institution) is in compliance with environmental health and safety laws and regulations.

EHS is the only department at the University of Michigan (U-M) with the authority to verify compliance and review the applicable documents needed for the grant application process.

NOTE: Completing the documents needed for the grant application takes considerable effort in fact-gathering and verification.  Therefore, EHS requires five days to complete a document.  If EHS receives a request with less than five days to complete the document, there is no guarantee it can be completed by the deadline.

DOD/DOE/EPA Grant Forms with Questionnaires, and Checklists

Some granting agencies require an Environmental Questionnaire to be included with the grant application.  Lab directors must complete the Environmental Questionnaire and send it, along with the lay abstract of the project, to EHS for review.

Environmental Compliance Assurance (ECA) form

EHS is responsible for signing the ECA form for each proposal that receives funding.  Lab directors must provide the following information when contacting EHS regarding the ECA form.

  • The project title
  • The PI’s name
  • A lay abstract of the project

Send all ECA form requests to:
