Waste Minimization

Although all departments at the University of Michigan (U-M) generate waste, waste generated in lab is the most difficult and costly to dispose of.  To help reduce the amount of waste generated in laboratories, EHS, Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) developed the following program, procedure, and guideline for reducing waste and preventing waste from entering the environment:

U-M recycles other waste known as “universal waste.”  Universal waste is “hazardous waste” that contains materials that are common in commercial products including:

  • Batteries
  • Bulbs
  • Ballasts
  • Consumer electronics
  • Refrigerants
