Powerwashing

University of Michigan (U-M) employees conducting outdoor cleaning activities at U-M must follow the groundwater permit for portable power washing operations issued by the State of Michigan.  Outdoor cleaning activities include, but are not limited to, the use of cleaners, soapy water, and wash waters.   Environment, Health & Safety (EHS), Environmental Protection and Permitting Program (EP3) monitors the outdoor cleaning activities and manages the groundwater discharge permit for portable power washing operations.

Permit: Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (Authorization to Discharge (to ground) #GW1110289), under Rule 2211(e).  This permit allows wash water containing additives to drain into the surrounding ground for graffiti removal, cleaning of brick and stonework, and other activities as performed by U-M personnel.

  • Grounds Services maintains the records on all outdoor washing activities involving discharge to the ground
  • EP3 audits the log to ensure compliance with the permit
